This change comes after the Galaxy Z Flip 7 was shipped with Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2500 chip, which was seen as a downgrade by many, especially when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip used in the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025.
Samsung’s decision to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip in the Galaxy Z Flip 8 may introduce new issues, such as overheating or subpar battery life, rather than solving any existing problems. The Galaxy Z Flip 7‘s Exynos 2500 chip did not have any major issues, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip’s performance is not significantly better in a way that justifies the potential risks.
They have been consistent in one thing: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip runs hot. Every phone integrates Snapdragon chips differently, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8‘s tight chassis means there’s less room for a large cooling system. This could lead to thermal throttling and reduced performance over time.
The device does not need the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip to perform well, as it is not intended for hardcore mobile gaming. Samsung’s Exynos 2500 in the Galaxy Z Flip 7 was sufficient, and the last-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite chip in the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 is also performing well.

Battery life is a concern. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 has the same 4,300mAh battery capacity as the Galaxy Z Flip 7, despite the switch to a more power-hungry Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. This is a risk, as the new chip may lead to shorter battery life.
Samsung made the Galaxy Z Flip 8 thinner and lighter by using a silicon-carbon battery, but not increasing the battery capacity, which is puzzling. A bigger battery would have been a better match for the power-hungry Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 features a new chip, but this may not be enough to justify the higher price, as the new processor may have contributed to the price hike.
As the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip may introduce issues such as overheating, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 has the same battery capacity as the Galaxy Z Flip 7, it’s hard to recommend it solely based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
