CI Games Rebuilds Umbral Realm After Static Criticism

CI Games has announced major changes to the Umbral area in Lords of the Fallen 2, responding to player feedback that earlier footage felt “too static.” The studio revealed during a Lifting the Veil videocast that the environment will now react more visibly to player actions and enemy presence, aiming to add variation without losing its decaying, oppressive tone. The update is part of a broader effort, dubbed “Project Living World,” to make the game’s environments feel more alive. The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch 2 later this year, ending its exclusive status on the Epic Games Store.

The team emphasized that co-op is now built into the game from the start, unlike its 2023 predecessor where it was added retroactively. Shared progression allows players to affect loot, quests, and traversal together, with the developers describing the integration as more organic. The game’s world design shifts from isolated portal zones to fully interconnected biomes, with environmental cues guiding transitions between regions. This approach, the developers said, makes exploration feel more seamless and immersive.

A new Japanese-inspired biome called Yisugen, marked by war and corruption, is highlighted as a standout area. The team described it as visually distinct yet consistent with the game’s dark fantasy themes. Other regions, like a coastal area with storm-lashed castles, are also under development. The Umbral area’s overhaul remains central, with the developers stressing the balance between dynamism and its inherently bleak atmosphere.

A katana, a new weapon class, was confirmed after player demand. Described as fast and stylish, it complements the franchise’s heavier combat style. Weapon choice will influence gameplay significantly, with varied stances, dual-wield options, and magic/ranged mechanics.

Player choices will impact multiple endings, with outcomes extending beyond simple final-screen summaries. The studio’s focus on iterative improvements, from co-op to environment design, reflects a commitment to addressing community concerns while expanding the game’s scope.

The Lifting the Veil series, which has included exclusive developer interviews cited by major media, continues to provide deep dives into Lords of the Fallen 2.

The game’s evolution from its 2023 release shows the challenges of balancing player expectations with creative vision. By addressing feedback on co-op, weapon variety, and environmental immersion, CI Games aims to deliver a more cohesive and engaging experience. As development nears completion, the focus remains on ensuring that the Umbral area’s transformation feels meaningful rather than superficial.
