Barkour sets 2026 release with new Gamescom demo

A stealth-action game featuring a tuxedo-wearing German Shepherd spy will launch in late 2026, its developer confirmed this week. Warsaw-based VARSAV Game Studios set the release window for Barkour as Q4 2026 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The announcement included a new story trailer that premiered on IGN and a promise of a larger playable demo at next week’s Gamescom in Cologne. VARSAV timed the news to its tenth anniversary, marking four years since development began.

The Spy Who Wagged His Tail

Agent T.H.U.N.D.E.R., the game’s canine protagonist, is a German Shepherd equipped with gadgets and trained in parkour. His ears twitch at suspicious sounds, and his tail wags between missions. A translation device converts his thoughts into human speech, delivering briefings alongside comedic remarks and occasional emotional reflections.

VARSAV outlines three playstyles for every encounter: pure stealth, parkour-based movement, or direct combat. The studio states that no two playthroughs need to look the same, aligning with the immersive-sim genre that includes Dishonored, Deus Ex, and Hitman. The third-person camera, unlike the first-person perspective of those titles, keeps T.H.U.N.D.E.R. visible at all times, emphasizing his canine body language.

More Than a One-Joke Premise

The game’s antagonists oppose a covert animal intelligence organization. The most notable supporting character is Agent S.T.O.R.M.

Earlier trailers highlighted mechanics like parkour and gadgets. The new story trailer instead focuses on T.H.U.N.D.E.R.’s motivation, mixing spy-action humor with emotional moments. The studio estimates 15 to 18 hours of handcrafted single-player content.

Demo Expands Next Week at Gamescom

A free demo is already available on Steam, showcasing T.H.U.N.D.E.R.’s movement and gadget systems. The version VARSAV will bring to Gamescom next week is described as a “major new build,” not just a minor update. It will include improvements to gameplay, presentation, and content, starting August 27.

The studio has not announced a simultaneous digital release for the expanded demo. Attendees will get the first full look at the game’s current state, while remote players must wait.

The original release was planned for 2025. In October of that year, VARSAV delayed it to 2026, citing a need for further refinement. The studio also withdrew from Steam Next Fest: October 2025 Edition. The Q4 2026 window is the first firm post-delay commitment, though no specific date has been set.

The existing Steam demo remains available for those who want an early look. For others, the expanded Gamescom build will be the next milestone.
